Looking For A Rainy Day.

It needs to rain here on The Farm.  It is all getting a bit dire now.  I try not to think about it as there is not a lot we can do.  Except wait.  And wait.  I think it is a bit of a cliche that farmers go on about the weather so I try not to do it too much on the blog. (Although it is one of the most important variables we can't control in our business.)  The fact is though, at the moment it is ridiculously dry.

Look.

I took these last week.  It is our airseeder coming up the hill near The Farmhouse.   See all the dust in its wake.

Air Seeder...

....And Dust

It's horrible out there.  Like the desert only dustier.  Plus I am sick of the sight of the skeletal remains of weeds everywhere.  It is time to bring on the green.

There is some hope on the horizon as there is a tentative forecast for rain towards the end of this week.  I want to see it on the ground though!  So that our crops can come up and do their stuff.

Clear skies have been making for chilly nights here at the moment.  I have been practicing lots of evening couch time.

I have also been thinking about driveways after my previous post.  Driveways seem to suggest a little journey.  You never quite know what you will find at the end the first time you drive down one.

Hope all is well wherever you are.

A lot of farmers in our region have had to dry seed and keep all fingers and toes crossed that the rains will come. We had a bit of a sprinkling last weekend, but nowhere near enough.
Mother Nature just snaps her fingers and we go from extremely wet one year to ridiculously dry the next. What game is she playing at? :/

i went to boarding school with lots of country kids and I can remember to this day the stress and worry associated with lack of rain. My fingers are crossed for you. xx

Will be hoping and wishing and praying for some rain out your way :( I know the worry and angst that comes with 'the waiting' for the weather to just give you a break! Mother nature can be a mean bitch sometimes. Rain is our problem here, how's the irony, we're at school for a week in Longreach and hoping it doesn't rain so we can get home and the creek doesn't flood! Boys got a truck load of heifers bogged in the creek in the dark last night, fun fun.

I've got a lot of friends in the country and know how devastating it can be. Wishing lots and lots of rain for you x

We needed rain desperately too - everything was and still is bone dry and then I commented on someones blog about how dry it is here and that it never rains and the next DAY it poured. Non-stop rain for 2 days. It was heaven. Sending you lots of rain vibes your way :-)

Hope it's on its way for you AFW. Well and truly understand the angst associated with the weather. So out of our control, yet our livelihoods depend on it.

I hope you get some rain soon - our break of season was late but we have been getting steady sprinkles so our farmers are happy.

Years back, we used to get our weather 'from the West' but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore - we seem to cop what Melbourne is having... weird!?

Fingers crossed for you,

Joolz

I hope you get your rain. We farmers are obsessed with the weather because no matter what part of the world we live in, the weather makes or breaks us, yet it's completely out of our control.

hope it comes bucketing down your way asap, it is all looking a little crispy.
and the driveway thing, yep, before we bought Betsy I had major driveway envy every time I drove past her. that long flat expanse of concrete was a major selling point and the kids give it a good work out on their bikes/scooters. melx

I figured I might as well comment. I am no expert on the weather but I know that I hate it when it rains on the weekends when we are not working. I always wish that it could rain in the night just so we didn't have to worry about it in the day. After reading your blog I realised how I take rain for granted and not think about it any other way. I don't have a farm and I don't rely on the rain for any crops other than my herbs and garden plants etc. but now I do wish it would rain your way, just enough to grow your crops and help you but not too much that it will ruin any good you've done.

Crossing my fingers for us both at the moment. I'm hoping that rain on the horizon actually happens. My hubby is getting itchy feet and a little short with everyone and we only crop a small amount!

When you talked about dry seeding weeks ago, I added the nearest town to you to my weather list on my phone and checked the rain radar for about two weeks. I then forgot about it - I can't believe you still haven't had any rain! I hope the Farmer is in a position to be able to take a C'est la vie approach... I can imagine it would send you batty (as well as broke) otherwise :( Hope things get better soon. Suzx

Hard to imagine this from here but I do know how hugely the weather looms for my farming neighbours and even on a small scale for me with my couple of acres of food growing. Sending you lots of steady Welsh rain for a week or so!

Oh god, have some of ours, it never stops . I heard the butcher complaining saying the cows were differing from too much.
