Chocolate Slice For A Monday Morning

My Mum used to make this for us all the time when I was growing up.  So often, in fact, that my brother and I went through a phase of hating it...

As these things so often go - I now make it for The Farmchildren as a treat.  It is ridiculously easy and very yummy.

The ingredients are as follows:

  • 1 cup brown sugar (my Mum used to use white)
  • 1 cup SR flour
  • 1/2 cup of dessicated coconut
  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa
  • 125g butter or margarine, melted (It was Flora all the way when I was a child)
  • 1 lightly beaten egg
Preheat your oven to about moderate.  Mix the sugar, cocoa, flour and coconut up in a bowl.  Pour in the melted butter and then the egg.  Mix up and press into a greased and lined (I am big on greasing and lining.  It prevents a multitude of stuff ups) slice tin.  Bake in a moderate oven for 20-30 minutes.  Bring it out and let it cool for 5 minutes and then ice with chocolate icing whilst still warm and in the tin.  My Mum always used to sprinkle more coconut on top.  The Farmchildren will eat coconut but only if they don't realise it is there, and so I use hundreds and thousands.

Chocolate Slice
I bet I am not the only child of the 70s who can remember this one!

My mum fed us this for years and now it still turns up at picnics and parties. I think she put weet-bix in hers to make it into health food a la 70's. Looks like that's afternoon tea today!

A friend of mine who grew up in Perth often makes this! I haven't seen it otherwise and I am another child of the 1970s!

I was a poor deprived 1970s child of a suddenly vegetarian mother so no choc slice for me ... but it was Flora all the way in our house then too! It would never rate a mention in my mother's fridge today though. (or mine actually).

Actually I started to make a comment because I want to make a complaint! I'm trying to be healthy but this post has made me crave chocolate slice!!! I'll send you the bill for my gastric banding ;-)

I was a late 70s child and sadly i feel like i missed out because all my Mum baked us was orange cakes or apple cakes. Closest we came to choc cakes was marbled cakes... Farmboy and Farmgirl are very lucky kids!!! :)

I was a child of the 80s (just) but the pic bought back the choc slice memories! My little sister and Dad were very keen on it; I was more partial to Mum's rock cakes but would still swipe a piece of choc slice every so often :)

I am glad pictures of yummy baked goods have brought back memories and cheered up everyone Monday morning.... Sometimes we all need a little virtual sugar.

Thank you so much for linking this to me! I am the same as your children - a little anti coconut that I can see - so the 100's & 1000's on this are perfect.

I shall be using this for the cake stall for sure - thank you!

xx

Mmmm - found your blog via "Planning with Kids" - via her raving about your chocolate slice - making it TODAY !! great recipe - reminds me of growing up in Country NSW in the 70's. My Mum and Dad were quite the "self sufficient" couple and grew all our own veges and Mum made our own bread - mmmmm - anyone have a recipe for peanut butter cookies?

I can't believe I missed this the first time around. Yum. Maybe I need to make this tomorrow? Oh yes, I do.

Visiting via the Rewind.

I'm pretty sure we used to have a version of this but like Annie, with weetabix added.

Great for making with the kids too. thanks for the reminder!

Found you via Planning with Kids and her version of your recipe.
My Mum also made a version of this slice when I was growing up in the wheatbelt (north-east of Perth). Made it today for afternoon tea. Thanks for the memories!!
