Driveway Issues

The Farmer is very busy at present getting The New Farm ready so we can crop it this year.  There is another little issue he had to attend to. We have a long driveway (about 3km) at The New Farm and it has a creek crossing about two thirds of the way along it. The creek crossing had washed away a few times this summer and we haven't even had lots of rain.  There is also a little bridge which needs some major work. Before we get really wet (hopefully!) this winter we thought we better do something about the crossing.

The Farmer arranged this.

Excavator Repairing Creek Crossing

A culvert (which is like a big pipe for water to flow through) has been placed in the creek and then heavy gravel is being placed over the top. Hopefully this will get us by until we can repair the bridge.

I saw this near The New House the other day.

A Southern Cross Windmill

Windmills are nowhere near as common as they used to be on farms. Solar pumps are just as efficient and not as dangerous so lots of farmers have moved in this direction.  I love this windmill though and The Farmer has promised me it can stay....

I'm glad you're keeping the windmill - I love them! I don't get why they can't use the solar pump but keep the windmill turning just because... ha, that's really not a 'farming' attitude, is it!! I'm glad you're keeping yours. x

Tai Tai - I think I take things like that for granted because I haven't even noticed...! I will look harder next time.

Maxabella - An amazing number of farmers do leave them just for aesthetic reasons. Eventually they do become structurally unsound if they are not maintained though. The Farmer takes them out most of the time because he hates messy paddocks.

Georgie - Thanks Georgie!

We had windmills on our farm when i was growing up - they do have a fabulous farmer feeling about them. And I bet you'll be glad for that culvert come winter time. How long now till the big move?

Good for you - I love windmills, they are a reminder of my youth out in the country...culverts too, but those are for some reason not so romantic as an image!

Wow! love the big earth mover digger thing you got to do the driveway, my husband would be tickled pink to get behind the gears of one of those!
I love a good windmill, they do make for pretty farm asthetics but of course if dangerous should be removed... to think they are being phased out in favour of solar pumps :-(
