Stuff.

Can't believe the weekend is over already.  Particularly because I didn't seem to do very much. Although we did get stuck into the garden yesterday and clean it up.  This finally happened because the weather actually cooled down.  After weeks of 37 degrees celsius and above (mainly 40s) we had a day where it was only 30 degrees.  So exciting.  Plus we got to sleep without the air conditioner.  Such are the highlights of my life.  Actually scratch that as last week did have a few highlights.

Valentine's Day.  OK - that is a bit misleading because it wasn't a highlight because of any Valentine's Day romantic efforts on the part of myself or The Farmer.  (We had planned to have some champagne but The Farmer wound up getting our truck unstuck all evening as the driver had gone somewhere he shouldn't have.)  What was exciting is that one of my closest friends had a gorgeous baby girl.  So this made Valentine's Day for us.  Not to mention the fact that if the new princess should ever need spoiling on her birthday in years to come she should do well with the double whammy of Valentine's Day and birthday.  Incidentally when I arranged for flowers to be sent the next day I was unable to get any sort of pale pink teddy to go with them.  The florist sold out on Valentine's Day.  This made me somewhat concerned as I couldn't imagine being overly excited if I got a pale pink soft toy on Valentine's Day.

Pink For A Girl

I bought the rose in the photo above to replace one that did not survive our summer.  It is absolutely beautiful but its name is "Perfume Passion" which is descriptive at best.  However if you see it in a nursery I would definitely grab one if you are a rose fan. (Just ignore the name.) It is stunning, highly perfumed and very, very hardy.

My other highlight was getting around to lots of annoying jobs that desperately needed doing.  Now I know that sounds as boring as watching paint dry but I do love that sense of satisfaction of getting those niggling jobs done.

Things like washing cushion covers.

Playroom Cushions Now Clean

And finally getting more beds ready for the vegetable garden.

New Beds (Returning To The Scene Of Snakegate.)

On the subject of the garden I have finally given in and arranged to have a garden designer come and do some rough planting plans for us.  The hard landscaping is already set in stone (literally, given the large numbers of dry stone walls I have!) however there are several areas that need planting out.  I have decided it may work out cheaper in the long run to get some advice and not lose lots of expensive plants next February.  So I am quite excited about this decisions and have been concentrating on cleaning up the garden and really thinking about what I want.

OK - I can hear Farmchildren stirring and need to stir myself and get them breakfast and down to the bus in time.

Enjoy your Monday.

Very sensible to get the landscaper in. You garden in very tough conditions, and I decided the same as you - it would be cheaper to get someone in and do it properly, rather than move things around for the next 5 years, thinking it didn't quite look right and wasting growing time and money.

Congratulations to your friend on her little girl- what a lovely day to have a birthday on. Always a present, and the birthday completely overshadowing what can be an overhyped and commercialised day of Disappointment. Glad the weather cooled down and gave you a break....send it here please! xx

I'd be really interested to hear how your experience with a garden designer goes - and a positive plug for who you used if it's a good one :)

Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy reading your blog. Cheers, Sarah

We got our front garden landscaped years ago and even though its run down and overgrown (from neglect since the kids were born - it was my passion BK), the framework is there to tidy it up and replant. Money well spent I thought. (PS Thanks for the birthday wishes. You're so sweet xx)

I think a landscaper is a great idea, no more out of place so not thriving plants.

I love the rose and will look out for it. The cooler weather was divine, had all the windows opened and created a wind tunnel. Now today I have to re do all the floors as they were covered in wind dust. Bring on the rain, less dust. xxx Rae

Clean cushions! Yes! I have just washed all mine too. Thought i'd better make good use of all the hot weather.

It's been stinking hot here too, but today it felt like autumn was just around the corner!
